Nathan Broadhead’s first-half goal secured Ipswich Town all three points despite a strong start and finish by City.

Broadhead struck in the 17th minute from the edge of the box and despite City going close, including Harry Cornick having an effort cleared off the line, the Robins came away empty-handed.

The opening exchanges edged in favour of City, with Sam Bell firing a long-range shot inside the first two minutes.

Ipswich were equally dynamic and despite good early pressure from Connor Chaplin and Kayden Jackson, Vaclav Hladky was the busier of the two keepers being forced into another save. Mark Sykes’ floated cross into the area found Tommy Conway, whose header was comfortably saved.

Sure Fixed Matches

The Tractor Boys grew confidently into the game, forcing Max O’Leary into an excellent save to deny Massimo Luongo’s curling effort.

Andy King and Rob Dickie were increasingly busy making big blocks and defecting crosses but Ipswich’s intensity was rewarded with a goal in the 16th minute after City failed to clear their lines. Broadhead drilled his shot low and hard at the City goal to beat O’Leary.

The Robins responded well and City’s midfield trio – Matty James, Jason Knight and Taylor Gardener-Hickman – began to see a lot of the ball, feeding Sykes and Cameron Pring in wide areas.

City’s best chance of the half came in the 28th minute. Gardener-Hickman’s mazy run into the area presented him a shooting opportunity but Hladky’s smart save denied the home side of an equaliser. The resulting corner led to Matty James striking on the volley inside the area, but the Town’s defence held firm.
